Location 

GEMCO is one of the world's largest manganese mining and concentrating operations located on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, accounting for over 20% of the worlds' high-grade manganese ore production. GEMCO controls and operates all aspects of mining, processing, logistics and shipping on Groote Eylandt.  Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963. This operation has excellent facilities for its workforce including gyms, beachside workout area, swimming pool, golf course, tennis and squash courts, sports oval and scenic walking track.

About the Vacation Program 

Running over a 12 week period, participants will be given a unique opportunity to learn and excel in their chosen career while being exposed to high-quality operations.  Our program runs from November 2022 to the February 2023.  

The Summer Vacation Program will offer you unique opportunities to:  

  • Grow personally and professionally in a dynamic, inclusive and supportive culture
  • Gain practical and meaningful experience at our high-quality class operations
  • Undertake a project relevant to your degree that you will own and deliver
  • Extend your professional network with colleagues from across the globe
  • Our Vacation Program acts as a pathway to our Graduate Program

About you 

We’re targeting students in their second last year who are studying: 

  • Survey
  • Geology
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Structural Engineering

You will need to be in your second last year, set to graduate by December 2022, of a relevant university degree and have the right to live and work in Australia. 

You will be willing to complete a medical assessment including drug and alcohol screening and be available to commence work in February 2023.  

You should be able to work on a Fly-In/Fly-Out basis from Darwin or Cairns; South32 encourage and support graduates to relocate to these locations.
